Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo are set to return to the Switzerland national team for November's UEFA Nations League fixtures. The Swiss Football Association (SFV) has confirmed both players are eligible again for the matches against Slovenia and Scotland after serving suspensions.
The four-match ban and fines of 150,000 Swiss francs each were the consequence for using fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates in 2022. National team director Pierluigi Tami stated the decision to allow their return was made after considering all circumstances. "We considered this from various perspectives," Tami said. "The specific circumstances of both cases, the concluded legal proceedings, and the sporting consequences already implemented all factored into the decision."
Yakin's Call on Captaincy
The return also raises the question of the captain's armband for Granit Xhaka. The 34-year-old midfielder, who has led the side since 2018, was stripped of the role during his suspension. The SFV clarified that the final decision rests with head coach Murat Yakin, who will announce the squad on November 5. Tami expressed conviction in the move: "We are convinced that a return to the national team in November is responsible and the right thing to do."
The return of the experienced duo comes at an ideal time. Switzerland top Nations League Group E with a perfect record of four wins from four matches and are on the brink of direct promotion to League A. Recent results show this strong phase: the team's latest victory was a 3-0 win over North Macedonia on October 6, following wins against Slovenia (2-1) and Scotland (3-0). The full standings show their clear lead. The top scorer in this qualifying phase so far is Johan Manzambi with three goals.
Strong Foundation
The commanding table position had already allowed room for newcomers during the October international break. Winsley Boteli, Zachary Athekame and Sascha Britschgi made their debuts across the first four group matches. With Xhaka (152 caps) and Embolo (26 goals in 92 appearances) returning, two experienced pillars rejoin a squad that travels to face Slovenia on November 13. The return fixture against Scotland follows three days later. The team heads into these decisive matches aiming to seal promotion on the back of a four-game winning streak.
