Breel Embolo has completed a transfer from Stade Rennes to MLS side Atlanta United. The 29-year-old Switzerland striker signed as a Designated Player through the 2029-30 season.
The Swiss national team currently leads its World Cup qualifying group with seven points from three matches. They have scored seven goals and conceded three. Their next competitive fixture is an away match against North Macedonia on September 26, as listed on our fixtures page.
How did the move happen?
Embolo was initially not planning a club move after Switzerland's World Cup exit against Argentina on July 12. He had shut off his phone to spend time with his family. When Atlanta United reached out, the timing caught him off guard. "I was not ready," Embolo said of the club's first approach.
The persistence of the American club and Embolo's own positive experience of the United States during the World Cup changed his mind. "Since the first day, the love, the desire to get me here was huge," the forward explained. Talks progressed after that initial, unexpected contact.
What does Embolo bring to Atlanta?
Chris Henderson, Atlanta United's Sporting Director, described the signing as a major coup. "We're pleased to bring a player with Breel's combination of talent and experience at the highest levels to Atlanta United," Henderson said. He highlighted Embolo's strong World Cup form and his proven goal-scoring record in Europe's top leagues.
Embolo laid out his own priorities. "I want to bring my experience," he stated. "Of course, I'm a striker, so I want to score. But the most important thing is to win." His career has included spells at Schalke, Borussia Monchengladbach, and most recently Rennes.
What is Switzerland's current status?
The Switzerland national team has a solid record from its last five matches: three wins, one draw, and one loss. Their recent form reads LDWWW, with the most recent result being the 3-1 loss to Argentina. The squad maintains a positive goal difference of plus four.
Leading their World Cup qualifying group underscores the team's strong condition. All current statistics and the squad lineup can be found on our stats and squad pages. The focus now shifts entirely to preparing for the match in North Macedonia in late September.
