Okafor made the announcement via social media on Tuesday. "This is the most difficult letter I have ever had to write in my football career," said the striker. He cited a deep conflict and a breakdown of trust with Yakın's coaching staff as the reason, stating that promises were not kept, leading to a lack of respect and trust. The Swiss Football Association (SFV) confirmed the retirement, issuing a statement that it respects the player's decision and wishes him well at his club.

Previous criticism and World Cup experience

Okafor had publicly criticised Yakın and federation officials back in March. After an open conversation, he returned to the squad 16 months later and participated in the 2026 World Cup. There, he made only a brief substitute appearance in the Round of 32 match against Algeria. Okafor described the World Cup as the hardest period of his career but stressed he went into the tournament with a positive mindset and strong motivation. His current decision, he said, has nothing to do with playing time but is a matter of principle.

"I know I haven’t always done everything right in the past," Okafor acknowledged. At the same time, he emphasised his ongoing commitment: he still wants to play for Switzerland and give everything for his country. He wishes the national team only good things and will continue to support and cheer for them. Okafor, first called up to the senior national team in 2019, has earned 26 caps and participated in two World Cups and one European Championship.

Impact on ongoing qualification

The retirement comes as Switzerland are in a strong position in World Cup qualifying. Murat Yakın's side tops its group with seven points from three games, holding a three-point lead over Canada. Their form in the last five competitive matches reads three wins, one draw, and one defeat (LDWWW). The next fixture is an away match against North Macedonia on September 26th.

Okafor is considered a key player at Leeds United, capable of playing as a central striker or on either wing. Given his age and club form, a return to the national team in the future remains a distinct possibility. For the upcoming tasks, Yakın must now plan without the versatile attacker. The SFV's current injury list includes Luca Jaquez, Rubén Vargas, and Silvan Widmer. The last meeting with Argentina ended in a 3-1 defeat on July 12th.
